Day 31: Happy Halloween!

Happy hauntings to all! I love dressing up for Halloween and I wasn’t going to let the fact that it landed on a Thursday bring me down. In my college days, Halloween on a Thursday was like winning the jack(-o-lantern)pot! These days I probably go to bed before some of tonight’s trick-or-treaters. Alas, I made my costume a little more fashion friendly and added a special guest! Dressing up–really dressing up–is one of my favorite things. It doesn’t matter if it’s a special event, party or wedding, I’m happy to wear a fancy dress and heels. This gorgeous organza dress is by the talented Betsey Johnson and happens to be what I wore to my junior prom. When I saw it at the store, I think I may have shed a tear. It’s one of the most beautiful dresses I’ve ever seen. I think I’ve worn it about three times in my life and since it was a bit of a splurge, I’m always looking for more places to wear it. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how a princess was born this Halloween. It’s not that creative, but whatever. I think a pretty princess is a little boring without a handsome devil–cue my pint-sized guest, Sunny the Westie. Isn’t that costume adorable!? She’s a little cutie, but she definitely has a devilish side. Don’t we all?

Day 30: Peplum crazy

I’m a huge fan of peplum tops, so I instantly fell for this skirt adaptation. Peplum is a girly girl’s dream design. It’s pretty, flowy and flattering. When they first started gaining popularity, I nabbed every one I saw. Now my closet is inundated with them. In an effort to still enjoy the trend, I decided to change it up a bit and get this skirt. It’s still super flattering because the ruffles hit right under my waist, minimizing the hips and stomach. In contrast with the flowy peplum, I chose a sleek sweater. Anything loose would have looked sloppy and instantly unflattering. This sweater works with the skirt to maximize the overall look. I’m obsessed with chunky necklaces and this sweater was made to be beefed up. I’ve said before that I don’t buy a lot of basics, but they are necessary for loud necklaces, like this one. The necklace is so special on its own that I didn’t want a shirt to overcrowd it. I highly encourage the peplum design, but if you’ve already got a few, keep your eye out for extra special pieces!

Day 29: Put your party pants on

Patterned pants are one of the fall trends I was most excited to try this year! Yesterday I did a little shopping, and I couldn’t resist showing off some of my new purchases. Pants with a pattern–any pattern–can be a little daunting. I usually reserve patterns for anything but pants, but I like the trend so I decided to get out of my comfort zone a little bit. I, of course, thought of this blog while shopping for today’s pants and was proud of myself for veering away from conventional things I’ve bought in the past. A lot of magazines say to wear patterns on top, to draw the eye away from misgivings you might have on your lower half. I usually follow this advice because I’m a fairly normal woman who wants things to look as flattering as possible. However, taking chances is just SO much more fun. When I saw this diamond pattern, I thought it was different enough, but the colors weren’t too out of control. Just because something is “trendy,” doesn’t mean everything in the category is okay to wear. I’m definitely not a fan of all of the patterns out there, but I’m loving geometric patterns in warm colors right now. My advice: Choose patterns that whisper sweet nothings–skip the ones that scream.

Day 28: Some of them want to be used by you

If I’m going to succeed in this challenge, versatile pieces are imperative. This dress is an item that I’ll be able to transform into umpteen different outfits. Stripes are always a “do” and my favorite color of the season–olive–makes it something I can wear for months before putting it away for the summer. Most items can be mixed and matched at least a few times, but this dress has some important qualities that allow it to be used over and over again. First, it’s light and cotton, which makes it easy to wear when its warm or top with a sweater as it gets cooler. Plus, the neutral colors allow me to have endless jacket, sweater and pants options to layer on top and underneath the dress. I’ll always choose a dress over anything else because they are so easy to just slip on and go. They’re also one of the best items to use for layering. Today’s outfit was pretty basic and something I would consider a level one as far as layering goes. I started getting a little excited because I have SO many wonderful things planned for this dress, but I forced myself to dial it back a notch. I’m going to wait for it to get a little colder before I reveal everything I’ve got hidden up my sleeves!

Day 27: Ready or naut

Items with a nautical feel are irresistible to me. When I wear something crisp with blue and white colors, I can’t help but feel an easy-going, sailing vibe. It could also be that living in landlocked Arizona has made me love things that are different than what I’m used to. Sure, we can go to lakes, but that’s not anything like sailing on a boat–or by miracles–a yacht. I don’t know if this dress was created with sailing in mind, but it’s the first thing I think of when I look at it. Fashion is all about interpretation, which makes everything you wear especially self-expressive. Nautical wear is most popular on the coasts, where it’s practical, but I think everyone else should enjoy the impracticality of it. Sometimes I use fashion to create an experience that’s completely its own. I chose to pair gold accessories with this dress because I like the contrast of the metal with the soft colors. I topped it off with this super cozy grey sweater. It’s perfect for an afternoon of sailing on my imaginary yacht.
