Day 123: Knockout

Black and blue is a combination I’ve had problems with in the past. They are so similar that if the blue is too dark, the outfit is completely bland and boring. This maxi skirt has a black and metallic waistband, meaning I basically had to wear black with it at least once. I decided to get it out of the way and ended up really liking how it turned out. I love maxi skirts on other people, but I wasn’t sure it would really compliment my body type. When I found this one in beautiful royal blue with metallic studs, I thought it was time to test my theory. Not only is it flattering, it automatically makes me look dressy and on-trend. I discourage maxi skirts in busy patterns unless you are very tall or very slender. If you love it, get it–this is just my advice. I knew black would match the best, so I added this black t-shirt and vegan leather jacket to keep warm. The royal blue is bright enough that it doesn’t get lost in translation with the black items–this is what you always want when mixing these colors. I added some gold accessories, although the metallic studs can look both silver and gold depending on what I wear. This look  might be black and blue, but it definitely goes for the knockout.

Day 122: Back to basics

Whether you’re having a relaxed day or a hectic day, going back to the basics will never steer you wrong. Sometimes I just need to recharge myself or my wardrobe and going basic always does the trick. Life can get complicated, but I can always control what I’m wearing. This outfit is virtually a blank palette that allows me to focus my energy back on my creativity. I really enjoy being glamorous, sparkly and bold, but it’s really good for me to take a break from all that once in a while. I chose a simple white tank that has a little thicker fabric because it looks nicer and sucks you in a bit. These black jean leggings are SO worn in and comfortable while looking traditional, chic black. I, of course, couldn’t completely surrender to basic so I made a few exceptions. I love this “basic” grey sweater because it’s so easy to wear with so many things. The design isn’t very basic, but the style and color of it is. I also ended my outfit with these great grey combat boots to add a little fun. The result is a basic outfit that looks effortless–except I carefully thought through each component. Dressing down doesn’t have to mean dressing without thinking.

Day 121: Keep me warm

I am always cold. It could be the middle of the summer and I’ll bring a sweater to wear inside a restaurant. You’d think living in Arizona would condition me, but I think I’ve only gotten worse over the years. One way being constantly cold isn’t a negative is in my fashion endeavors. I love winter clothing and styles, so needing to keep warm all of the time has its advantages. One sweater and I wish I could wear 24/7-365 is the one I’m wearing today. I was off work today and did “me” all day. This translates into going to my favorite gym class, lunch and milling around shops. I thought this outfit would be perfect for the day’s agenda. This sweater is soft and warm yet incredibly stylish. I love how the tan color contrasts with the olive shirt and gives off a casual, but put together vibe. I’ve worn these jeans with this sweater before, so I changed it up by cuffing the bottoms and wearing flats–plus the obvious difference in shirt. It takes on an entirely new look with these small changes. I added some gold and sparkly accents, but kept it simple–like my day. I absolutely love this combination, and absolutely love days off!

Day 120: Come together

I don’t usually mix black with brown. To me, black is dressy and brown is usually casual. But after I made up my mind to wear this black peplum skirt and leopard heels, I wanted to wear something different than I usually would. If I had it my usual way, I would have worn a lace top or a red sweater. However, I’m still trying to open myself up to different looks and combinations, so I tried to think of what would match just the heels. This sweater came to mind. The light brown color is similar to leopard fur and the maroon back is a nice contrast and surprise. Even though this sweater is made from a nice fabric, I wasn’t sure if it would look silly next to this smart skirt. But now that it’s put together, I’m actually pretty happy with it. I like how both the sweater and skirt match the heels, but don’t completely match each other. That’s why fashion can pull unlikely items together. If you have one thing that unifies them, the outfit can take on a fresh and interesting look.

Day 119: Give me the details

There’s nothing like a new top in a bold color to start off your week. This sweater does everything right. It’s super soft, has a vegan leather stripe and has a high-low hem. These details make the side view of the sweater flawless. Sometimes the most simple items are the best because of their subtle details. However, I added a short necklace to balance out the sweater’s basic neckline. Jean leggings were perfect for this top because they allow the longer-than-usual sweater to lay with minimal bumps. These black boots were the perfect companion to the vegan leather stripe. The overall look is pretty basic, but sometimes less really is more.
